Most medicines can be taken by breastfeeding mothers without stopping or interrupting breastfeeding. Withholding breastfeeds is not ‘risk free’ as both mother and baby will be deprived of the benefits of breastfeeding. Medicine use can be a barrier to breastfeeding and the duration of breastfeeding may be shortened because of negative advice from healthcare providers.

It is important that pharmacists can support women to make informed decisions about the use of medicines in breastfeeding and this module will help you do that.
